“When there’s no future left, life becomes easier.” I read this in a soldier’s collection of poems, and it has stayed with me. It captures a strange, calm, almost addictive feeling that settles over you in a war zone. This feeling is often fueled by adrenaline from constant missile attacks, and eventually by a search for meaning in the modern world.
After media coverage of the war in Ukraine decreased, Bohdana wanted to show what it feels like for someone whose motherland is at war, from the eyes of a civilian living in a city.
The movie is set in Odesa, three years after the full-scale war began, in a major city that has been heavily targeted by missiles over the past year. It follows a group of young artists living and creating: George, a painter; Yana, a musician; and Vlada, a performance artist. They spend their days by the sea.
What seems like a normal life is quietly shaped by the war. Their partners are in active conflict zones, they carry the constant guilt of being safe while their loved ones are not, nightly missile attacks slowly destroy the city, and sleepless nights have become countless over the past three years.
